Abstract

Face detection has always been a difficult problem that has no truly robust solution due to varying light conditions, differences in skin tone, and other factors of an ever-changing environment.

The approach presented in this project uses the phenomena of reflection of infrared light by the pupil of the eye. When the eye is illuminated with an infrared light, the pupil becomes white. Basically, we are taking advantage of half of the "red-eye effect" seen commonly in photographs. Using this to our advantage, we can find faces in an sequence of video frames.
