Description of a J Model Yacht

A J-Class model is a 1/16 scale (3/4"=1') model of the J-Class yachts that raced for the America's Cup in the 1930s.  Ten J's were built, six in the United States and four in England.

U.S.

  • Enterprise
  • Weetamoe
  • Yankee
  • Whirlwind
  • Rainbow
  • Ranger

England:

  • Shamrock V
  • Velsheda
  • Endeavour
  • Endeavour II

The full size J's were built to a formula that used the displacement, waterline length, hull girth, and sail area to arrive at a specified result.  The designer could change one dimension to get a desired result in another, for instance, he would adjust the displacement to get more sail area.  As a result, the designs of each of the J's are a little different, some are larger than other and there are slight variations in hull shape.

As an example of their size, the dimensions for Ranger are listed below.  Ranger was one of the largest J-yachts ever built.

Ranger Dimensions:

  • Length Over All (LOA) - 101.4 inches
  • Mast Height - 114.75 inches (approx. 9 3/4 feet)
  • Beam - 15 3/4 inches
  • Draft  - 11 1/4 inches
  • Water Line Length - 65 1/4 inches
  • Sail Area - 3,700 square inches to 4,200 square inches
  • Displacement - 90 pounds
